Fruit Roll-ups

Cover: It is ok.  Not as sophisticated like other books I have seen.

The Miracle of Mercy Land: A NovelMercy Land, a native of backwoods Bittersweet, has moved into Bay City in Alabama, working as 'Doc's girl', an assistant editor to Doc Phillips, editor and owner of the local daily newspaper in the 1930s.  Mercy knows almost every secret of Doc's, except one when a magical book appears in Doc's Office.

Doc calls Mercy into his office to figure out what is the purpose of the magical book.  They are able to see the lives of every citizen of Bay City, their past and present, their fears and hopes.  Doc thinks he can fix a wrong of the past by calling John Quincy.  Quincy is someone Mercy had known from the past, but she is not sure who he is.

Not only is Mercy trying to understand the meaning of the magical book and who is John Quincy, Mercy realizes that choices are made by everyone.  "That the choices we made did indeed turn the times for ill or for good--for everyone" (326).

River Jordan, author of The Miracle of Mercy Land, writes the book from three different points of view: Mercy, Doc and John Quincy, which is interesting because the reader is able to get a better idea of what the magical book.  River Jordan never fully describes the book, where it came from, and its ultimate purpose. This book is also filled with suspense as well.

Cover: Love the cover.  It is such a summer look.

Hatteras GirlHatteras Girl by Alice J. Wisler is a great "warm" read.  I read this book over the winter months, and it helped ease the winter blues.

Jackie Donovan is a Hatteras Girl at heart.  She loves her town, and it is her dream to own Bailey House, a bed and breakfast, with her best friend and roommate Minnie.  Jackie works for Lighthouse Views, as a business writer.  During one of her assignments she meets Davis Erickson, a realtor and owner of Bailey House.  She begins to fall in love with him, however Davis is not the gentleman he appears to be, causing Jackie to question her dream of owning the Bailey House.

A great read.  I would read other works by Wisler.

Love's First BloomRuth Livingstone and a toddler named Lily is sent to hiding after Ruth's father, Reverend Livingstone was charged for allegedly murdering a prostitute.  Ruth becomes Widow Ruth Malloy and pretends Lily is her daughter.  Ruth pretends that she was a prostitute herself, but has made amends and trying to get her life back together.  Living in a rural area, Ruth and Lily live with a childless couple who are part Reverend Livingstone's network.

Ruth doesn't seem to have much an identity before her father was charged with a scandal.  She seems she was living a sheltered life and doesn't really come off as an aggressive person.  Ruth finds comfort in an abandon garden, until a person name Jack Spencer decides to move into the property.  Jack has a secret of his own including not using his real name.  Despite his conflicting interests and secrets, Jack and Ruth begin to fall in love.

Is it possible?  Read the book to find out.

Love's First Bloom by Delia Parr is an enjoyable read.  Parr highlights the issue of prostitutes as a societal issue.

Cover: Simplistic, yet beautiful.

Amy InspiredAmy Gallagher, an aspiring writer, has been living on lists, yet hasn't been able to accomplish much in life.  She is constantly looking for the perfect words to use that she has neglected everything else in life.  When Amy takes a breather, she realizes her family and friends are constantly living life, growing and changing as they see fit, except her.

Amy begins to have internal conflict when she sees her eccentric roommate Zoe who also is a writer getting easily published in periodicals where Amy has been rejected.  Other internal conflicts for Amy includes seeing her mother finding love, her brother getting married, and not knowing who the mysterious Eli is (once he moved in with Amy and Zoe).   She also faces the conflict if she should just "break" her lists and take risks and live life.

Amy Inspired by Bethany Pierce was an enjoyable read.  I liked the fact that Amy could be someone you may personally know instead of some unrealistic person.  It is nice to read about what the "average" person is like.

I give Amy Inspired: 4 out of 5 stars.

Hearts AwakeningCover:  Beautiful.  Appropriate for the book.

Hearts Awakening, by Delia Parr, is a story about Elvira Kilmer, a spinister, who has run out marriage prospects.  An only child, now grown and not wanting to burden her cousins, Elvira looks for a job and ends up on Dillion's Island, located in the Susquehanna River, as a housekeeper for Jackson Smith.

However, Jackson has a scandal of his own due to his deceased wife.  He offers Elvira a marriage solution in order for both of them to benefit personally.  Elvira, Jackson and his two boys end up realizing this may be the best thing that had ever happen to them.

I would totally recommend this book for those who like historical fiction, as well as a clean read.  This is appropriate for junior high and high school readers.

She Walks in BeautyAuthor Siri Mitchell of She Walks in Beauty writes a historical fiction of Gilded Age Society in New York City.  Mitchell has done her research well.  Mitchell also includes the societal problems of New York City in the late 1800s.

Clara Carter of New York City is making her debut into New York City in the 1890s.  Clara had other plans--like going to college.  Clara's aunt dismissed Clara's governor, and told Clara she had to be groomed to go into society and catch the eldest son of the de Vries family of New York City.

Clara sorts through all sorts of emotions as she goes through the debutante society.  She remains loyal to Lizzie, her best friend, who also is going through the debutante society.  Frank de Vries the eldest boy doesn't seem to be all that in Clara's opinion.  Instead of winning Frank, Clara and Harold, Frank's brother.  Who remain mysterious are Clara's father and aunt.  They have their own motives for wanting Clara to win Frank.  It seems as though the de Vries family and the  Carter family have had some unfortunate business relations in the past, and Clara's father and aunt want to make up for the monetary losses.

This is a great read for young adults interested in historical fiction.  The cover is beautiful and elegant.
